The Advanced Mechanical Ventilation workshop organised by the Intensive Care Medicine Department (ICM) of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) was held from 20 to 21 May., This two-day course brought together 23 healthcare practitioners from National University Health System (NUHS), National Healthcare Group (NHG), and SingHealth, as well as international participants from Malaysia and Australia.

We were thrilled to host esteemed overseas faculty, including Dr Ross Freebairn, founder and trainer of the Beyond BASIC Mechanical Ventilation Course, and also former President of the Asia Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine.  ICM’s Senior Consultants Dr Amit Kansal, Dr Shekhar Dhanvijay and Dr Monika Gulati, as well as Visiting Consultant Dr Lee Kang Hoe, brought invaluable insights to the workshop as well.

The course provided participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills for managing mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. A variety of topics were covered, including the basics of mechanical ventilation, respiratory monitoring, applied respiratory physiology, as well as specialised strategies for conditions like ARDS, unilateral lung disease, and obstructive airway disease.

Through lectures, small-group case-based discussions, and hands-on skills stations, the session allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and gain practical experience with the latest ventilation technologies.
