Ng Teng Fong General Hospital’s Emergency Department Nurse Clinician Tan Soo Hui has been honoured with the Healthcare Humanity Award 2024 held on 17 October, at the Conrad Centennial Singapore, for her extraordinary selflessness and compassion in patient care. Nominated by her reporting officer, Assistant Director of Nursing, Ms Clarice Wee, Soo Hui exemplifies true commitment to healthcare, going above and beyond her duties to serve both her community and patients.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Soo Hui played a pivotal role in managing the hospital's fever tentage and pandemic areas.
Despite the surge in cases, Soo Hui often sacrificed her own needs, stepping up to support her staff by ensuring they took breaks while she continued to work tirelessly.
Soo Hui’s courage and resilience have set an inspiring example. 💪 One moment that highlights her bravery happened in February 2022: while helping an elderly COVID-positive patient, who was demented and afraid, Soo Hui’s N95 mask was accidentally pulled down, putting her at risk. Despite this, she calmly ensured the patient’s safety first—an act of selflessness that later resulted in her own COVID diagnosis. Her fearless dedication didn’t go unnoticed, earning her the COVID-19 Courage Fund award from the National Council of Social Service.
Beyond the pandemic, Soo Hui’s compassion extends into her humanitarian missions, both locally and abroad. Since 2009, she has partnered the Singapore Red Cross Society in providing medical services to special needs children and bringing the elderly out for trips. She has also self-funded medical missions to countries like Nepal, Cambodia, and Yemen. Her fearless commitment to serving the less fortunate, even in conflict zones, is a testament to her resilience and dedication.
Soo Hui's recognition with the Healthcare Humanity Award not only celebrates her personal achievements, but it also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of putting patient care at the heart of everything we do. Her story is a call to all of us to embrace empathy and dedication in our daily work and to be inspired by her example.
