From Bin to Win: Less Plastic, More Time, Greater Savings
Have you noticed fewer waste bins around campus recently?
This change is part of a waste bin optimisation initiative led by Group Hospitality Services to improve the way waste is managed across JurongHealth Campus. Through careful planning and close collaboration with staff, the team reviewed existing bin placements to reduce unnecessary resources while keeping waste disposal convenient for everyone.
The results have been impressive: fewer bins, fewer plastic liners, significant time savings and lower operating costs!
Phase 1: Rethinking Waste Bins in Administrative Offices
In 2025, Group Hospitality Services kicked off the initiative by reviewing waste bins across 22 administrative offices. At the time, there were approximately 800 bins—many of which were individual desk-side units.
Working closely with office teams, the department introduced shared waste bins in accessible locations. Thanks to strong staff support, the transition was seamless and delivered immediate, positive results, proving how small adjustments can spark meaningful workplace improvements.

Phase 2: Optimising Common Areas Across the Campus
Following the success of the first phase,
Group Hospitality Services expanded the initiative in 2026 to cover campus common areas.
The team assessed usage in corridors and public spaces, identifying underutilised or duplicate bins. Before making changes, nearby disposal points were evaluated to ensure convenient access remained for both staff and visitors. This allowed resources to be used far more effectively without impacting daily convenience.
