On 9 May 2024, Hand Hygiene Day was celebrated with a variety of engaging and educational activities spotlighting the crucial role of hand hygiene. The event was presented in two dynamic segments, each brimming with interactive and informative sessions for attendees.

The morning at Tower B Kampung was alive with excitement as our staff were fully engaged through a medley of games and learning activities. Three unique booths were set up to whisk attendees into an interactive exploration of hand hygiene and its importance.

At the first booth, organised by QII, participants tested their wits with a quiz on quality improvement concepts, diving into ongoing initiatives and their impact on healthcare quality. ISS took the helm at the second booth, guiding attendees through the seven essential steps of proper hand hygiene. Through a lively tabletop game, participants discovered the key actions to make their handwashing routine a potent shield against infections. Next, the Infection Control team showcased the Hand Hygiene Device (HHD), which unlocks the Computer-on-Wheels (COW) screen upon activation of the attached hand sanitiser. Here, participants engaged in hand hygiene-related questions, transforming the learning experience into an interactive one.

The second segment of the event took place at the Auditorium in the afternoon for a talk titled “Water Management,” delivered by a panel of experts including Adj Asst Prof Surinder Pada, SSN Wee Zhen Chian, and SSN Beevifatimah Ahamed Sha. The session provided a comprehensive overview of several key topics, including an in-depth explanation of biofilm, its formation, and its implications in healthcare settings.

The speakers also shared insights on the Water Management Programme, highlighting credible case studies from ICU water management practices in Spain and the Netherlands. One of the goals discussed was the plan to remove hand hygiene sinks from ICU pods 1, 2, and 5 by the end of 2024, marking a significant step towards innovative infection control measures.
