Opening Doors, Sharing Knowledge:
Peri-Op and ICU Open Houses

Much of nursing happens behind closed doors — in spaces few outside the team ever see. From the steady rhythm of machines in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the precision and pace of peri-operative theatres, these are highly specialised environments where skill, teamwork and calm under pressure define every move.

To bridge understanding and spark cross-departmental learning, our ICU and peri-operative nurses recently organised Open Houses that offered staff a rare glimpse into their world — and the opportunity to connect through shared purpose and curiosity.

ICU Open House (25 August 2025)

The ICU team welcomed about 120 staff participants—including student nurses, ward nurses, and nursing leaders—into their high-dependency environment to experience care up close. The open house aimed to introduce ICU care to ward nurses, increase familiarity with ICU equipment, and foster networking between departments.

Participants rotated through hands-on stations, trying their hand at intubation, mechanical ventilators, dialysis machines and intra-aortic balloon pumps. They also learned about ICU-led initiatives such as ICU Outreach and Compassionate Discharge services, and heard inspiring stories of nurses who transitioned from other nursing departments into ICU.

Participants found the open house engaging and informative.

“It’s very engaging and interactive,” said Amber, a student nurse. “This is my only chance to really understand ICU work.”

May Myat Thu, another student nurse, added: “Learning about the equipment, procedures and the stories of ICU nurses was very valuable.”

The ICU Open House offered participants an overview of daily ICU operations, shared practical knowledge,  and introduced them to the variety of roles within ICU—all while connecting with ICU colleagues in an interactive, engaging setting.

Peri-Operative Open House (2 October 2025)

On 02 October 2025, the peri-operative nursing team opened their doors to 32 participants eager to see what happens inside one of the hospital’s most complex and coordinated environments.

Through guided tours and conversations, participants:

  • Gain insight into peri-operative nursing practices

  • Explore potential interest in peri-operative nursing

  • Meet experienced nurses from peri-operative

  • Learn about peri-operative services and career opportunities

  • Network and share experiences with colleagues

  • Strengthen understanding and collaboration across departments

Keeping Minds and Doors Open

Both Open Houses reflected a shared commitment — to learn, connect and inspire one another. By opening up these traditionally restricted environments, our nursing teams reminded us that care extends beyond our own wards.

Let’s continue to keep our minds — and our doors — open to learning, collaboration and growth.
