Meet Our
Psychiatrist!

Hi, I'm Clin Asst Prof Michael! 👋
I am one of the OG psychiatrists who joined this hospital back in 2010. I now straddle three hospitals across NUHS and MOH.
Why psychiatry? Well, my mother did not allow me to study law, fearing that I would become a ruthless lawyer (which, to be fair, was very likely). So, I chose to study Medicine and eventually found my way to psychiatry because the mind is the last frontier.

I feel that the human mind still holds many secrets that we have yet to understand. What drew me to psychiatry was the opportunity to understand not just the illness, but the person experiencing it. Fortunately, I also got to combine my interest in law and the mind during my years in Forensic Psychiatry.

I spend my time getting to know the future young leaders from different medical and surgical specialties, shaping mental health policies and transformation for Singapore, and, every night, killing monsters in World of Warcraft.
Let's bust some common psychiatry myths!
Myth 1: Psychiatrists can only prescribe medication, and psychologists can only provide talk therapy.
In reality, psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, but many also provide psychotherapy and other psychological interventions. Psychologists use a wide range of evidence-based therapies and assessments.
Myth 2: You should only see a psychiatrist if you have a severe mental illness, and only see a psychologist if your mental health issues are mild.
False! Severity alone does not determine whether you should see a psychiatrist or psychologist. Both psychiatrists and psychologists can support and treat people experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties.
You ask, I'll answer!
