This also celebrates their tireless efforts in advancing medical research, enhancing patient safety, and shaping the future of healthcare education. Clinical A/Prof Gerald Chua has dedicated his career to mentoring and training medical students, doctors, and healthcare professionals in internal medicine, respiratory medicine, and intensive care medicine (ICM) since the start of his career, after graduating from NUS Medicine in 1994 and attaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1999.
Clin A/Prof Gerald's career is a testament to innovation in medical education and leadership. Beginning in 2000 at National University Hospital (NUH), he played a key role in pioneering the use of medical simulation to teach Crisis Resource Management to clinical teams. His contributions extended beyond Singapore, as he expanded these workshops to healthcare professionals across Malaysia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and China.
As the Residency Associate Designated Institutional Official of the National University Health System and in various leadership roles including Associate Dean and Education Director of Alexandra Hospital and Vice Chairman Medical Board, Clinical Education and Chairman, Medical Board of NTFGH, he was instrumental in shaping the landscape of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. His efforts from 2010 to 2024 laid the foundation for advanced medical education across the institutions under his oversight.
In addition to his work in clinical education, Clin A/Prof Gerald's contributions to medical ethics and professionalism have left a lasting legacy. Serving as Executive Director at the Singapore Medical Association (SMA) Centre for Medical Ethics & Professionalism from 2008 to 2019, he helped develop critical training in medical professionalism, health laws, and clinical ethics. His leadership also extended to the intensive care medicine (ICM) training in Singapore, where he helped establish the ICM Sub-Specialty Training Committee (SSTC) and its robust training pipeline for public health institutions. A member of the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination Board since 2015, Assoc. Prof. Chua continues to ensure the highest standards in medical education globally.
For his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and exceptional mentorship in internal medicine, respiratory medicine, and intensive care medicine, as well as his pivotal role in advancing the teaching of clinical crisis resource management and high-stakes clinical interactions for healthcare professionals, we proudly celebrate Clinical A/Prof Gerald Chua’s achievement of the National Outstanding Clinician Educator Award!
