Patient Safety Day 2025 - Are We Really Listening?

This year’s Patient Safety Day gathered more than 300 colleagues – doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff – under the theme “Addressing Patient Concerns” and the thought-provoking slogan, “Are We Really Listening?”

Patient safety begins with something simple: listening. When we tune in to patients’ spoken and unspoken concerns, we build trust, reduce harm, and deliver safer care.

Opening the event, Dr Lim Ghee Hian, Vice Chairman, Medical Board (Clinical Risk Management and Clinical Quality), reminded staff to “listen without prejudice” and to remain mindful of situational awareness – both vital to recognising patients’ needs.

The programme featured case-sharing videos, interactive discussions, and a keynote on "Addressing Patient and Family Concerns & Nurturing Trusting Relationships", delivered by Dr Neoh Sue Wern, Consultant, Medicine and Senior Staff Nurse Zhao Meijuan. A lively Q&A session followed, alongside the much-anticipated Patient Safety Star Awards.

The Perioperative Nursing team won the Group Award for their vigilance in preventing wrong-site surgeries and misidentifications, with more than 160 incident reports and 34 Good Catch Awards in the past year. Staff Nurse Sumitha Annasi and Senior Staff Nurse Nurul Fatinazwa Binti Ariff received Individual Awards for their dedication – including stepping in to help a woman who fainted during their commute in Johor.

The day underscored a simple truth: patient safety is not just about checklists or protocols. It is lived out in every interaction – on the ward, in the operating theatre, in counselling rooms, and even beyond hospital walls.

As part of our ongoing safety journey, staff are encouraged to explore resources on the Patient Safety intranet page and join upcoming QuEST collaborations.

The key message from Patient Safety Day 2025 is clear: when we truly listen, we don’t just hear patients – we protect them.
