Congratulations to our recipient of the Sustainability Impact Awards 2026!
We are proud to announce that Mr Ng Kian Swan, Chief Operating Officer for Group Facilities Management, Group Security & Group Emergency Planning at National University Health System (NUHS); Chair, Energy & Water Taskforce, National University Health System; and Chief Sustainability Officer, JurongHealth Campus, has been recognised with the Impact Leader Excellence Award at the Sustainability Impact Awards 2026.

Organised jointly by The Business Times and UOB, the Sustainability Impact Awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made a meaningful impact on environmental and societal well-being through their sustainability efforts. Launched in 2023, the awards are now in their fourth year, with the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at the National University of Singapore Business School serving as the Knowledge Partner. The individual category comprises the Impact Leader of the Year and Impact Leader Excellence Award, recognising individuals for their leadership and contributions to advancing sustainability.

Driving sustainability across healthcare
Mr Ng was recognised for his leadership in transforming NUHS institutions into more energy- and water-efficient, low-carbon and climate-resilient healthcare facilities.
Under his leadership, NUHS improved its energy efficiency by 4.0% and water efficiency by about 30%, measured against the FY2018–FY2020 baseline. These improvements translate to approximately 8.3 million kWh of annual energy savings and 716 million litres of annual water savings — enough to power about 1,700 four-room HDB households and supply about 4,800 four-room HDB households with water for a year.
NUHS has also made progress in reducing its carbon footprint. Its absolute Scope 2 carbon emissions peaked in 2023 and have continued to decline, putting the health system five years ahead of Singapore's 2028 target. In FY2025, absolute Scope 2 emissions fell by about 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) year-on-year, equivalent to taking about 500 passenger cars off the road for a year.
Beyond these measurable outcomes, Mr Ng has also contributed to building sustainability capabilities across the healthcare sector. Through the Healthcare Sustainability Exchange Programme, more than 400 delegates from 18 countries have been engaged in knowledge-sharing and capability-building efforts focused on sustainable hospital design and operations.
These efforts reflect an approach to sustainability that extends beyond individual initiatives, bringing together operational efficiency, carbon reduction and knowledge-sharing to support longer-term sustainability across the healthcare ecosystem.
Congratulations to Mr Ng Kian Swan on this well-deserved recognition, and for his leadership in advancing sustainability across our healthcare system!
The 2026 awards ceremony was held on 23 September, with Mr Heng Swee Keat, Chairman of the National Research Foundation, as Guest of Honour. This year's awards recognised 16 individuals and enterprises for their contributions to sustainable development, environmental innovation and social inclusion.
