How Curiosity Sparked a Journey of Innovation ๐กโจ
As a pharmacist, my training was centred around medications, patient care, and ensuring safe and effective clinical outcomes. Technology was something I used, not something I expected to lead. Like many healthcare professionals, I spent my days balancing patient needs, operational demands, and countless small challenges that seemed to come with the job.โ
Yet over time, I became increasingly aware that many of the obstacles we faced weren't clinical problems. They were workflow problems. Staff were spending hours on repetitive manual tasks. Patients were waiting longer than necessary. We had talented healthcare professionals dedicating precious time to processes that could potentially be redesigned or automated.

For years, I accepted these frustrations as part of healthcare. Then one day, I found myself asking a simple question: "What if it doesn't have to be this way?"
That question became the spark for my digital transformation journey.

The early days were filled with uncertainty. I wasn't an engineer, software developer, or IT specialist. In fact, I often felt like the least qualified person in the room when discussing automation systems, digital workflows, or emerging technologies. There were many moments where ideas seemed impossible, prototypes didn't work as intended, and solutions required multiple rounds of refinement before they delivered meaningful value.
But I quickly learnt that innovation isn't about having all the answers. It's about being curious enough to ask questions and persistent enough to explore possibilities.
What started as small efforts to improve workflows gradually grew into larger transformation projects. Over the years, I had the privilege of leading pharmacy automation initiatives that transformed how medications are prepared, stored, and dispensed. These projects not only improved operational efficiency but also allowed our staff to focus more of their time on patient care. One project even went on to receive national recognition through the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medal, but what meant more to me was seeing our staff spend less time on repetitive work and more time caring for patients.

One of the most defining moments in my journey came when I was selected for the Singapore Biodesign Innovation Fellowship. As the first pharmacist and allied health professional to enter the programme, I found myself working alongside clinicians, engineers, and innovators from diverse disciplines. The fellowship challenged everything I thought I knew about innovation. I realised the best ideas don't begin with technology—they begin with understanding people.
That lesson continues to shape how I approach digital transformation today.
I have come to realise that technology isn't the destination—it's simply the enabler. Real transformation happens when we make work easier for our colleagues and improve care for our patients.. Whether it is automation, artificial intelligence, robotics, or digital workflows, success comes from understanding the daily realities of frontline teams and co-creating solutions that genuinely make their work easier and more meaningful.
Looking back, digital transformation has given me far more than new technical knowledge. It has taught me the value of curiosity, resilience, and collaboration. It has shown me that some of the most impactful innovations come not from experts working in isolation, but from ordinary people who care enough to improve the systems around them.

If there is one message that I hope others take away from my story, it is this:
You do not need to be a programmer, engineer, or innovation specialist to contribute to digital transformation. You simply need to care about a problem, be willing to learn, and have the courage to try something different.
After all, every transformation starts with a single click.
