Bukit Batok East Community Health Resource Centre @ Nature View opens to screen for diabetes from 18 years old
The Bukit Batok East (BBE) Community Health Resource Centre @ Nature View is purpose built to bring early screening for diabetes into the heart of the community and serve as a hub for health and wellness resources for BBE residents, especially younger residents from 18 – 39 years of age. At the event held last Saturday (28 October), NTFGH healthcare staff also interacted with residents to share knowledge on diabetes management.

耳朵闷塞非小事 正视征兆保住听力 (Stuffy ear is not a trivial matter)
Associate Professor Raymond Ngo, Head and Senior Consultant, Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, NTFGH, emphasised that a primary method for alleviating symptoms is to use nasal drops to fill the Eustachian tube opening. Mr Andrew Teng, Senior Audiologist, NTFGH, also explained in the article that ear-related issues can stem from malfunctions in the ear or the inner ear's balance system.

眼睛黄斑病变 分干性和湿性(Two types of age-related macular degeneration: dry and wet)
Dr Hao Lei, Senior Resident Physician, Ophthalmology, NTFGH, shared that in early-stage dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), effective treatments are currently lacking, but dietary supplements are recommended for certain patients, especially when the condition is advanced or shows signs of wet lesions. For wet AMD, patients have more treatment options, including anti-VEGF medication to reduce the growth of new blood vessels and address edema, photodynamic therapy involving a photosensitising substance, as well as laser to target and destroy abnormal blood vessels in the retina.

Dr Chan Soo Ling, Consultant, Endocrinology, NTFGH, accentuated the need for screening, diagnosis and treatment criteria for young individuals with Type 2 diabetes. She noted a concerning trend where young patients need dialysis in their 40s and 50s, with an average life expectancy of only six years after starting dialysis.

Local artist Ms Teo Huey Ling’s felt artwork “Precious Moments”, which showcases pom-pom sculptures contributed by hospital staff, volunteers and art practitioners will be on display till June 2024. During the FB live session, she did a live demo of creating felt artwork.

They discussed the common symptoms of AMD and advised on ways to prevent the condition.
